Mount Rinjani 2013 D03 - Senaru Crater Rim

Woke up as early as 5am get suit up and check the bag packing was all in place. Waited at hotel lobby for the pickup by Adventure Lombok tour company Operation Manager Mr. Budi. Then found out the van will be slightly late and Mr. Budi will not be leading this trip. Later the van arrived with Mr. Haris, Guide Chief for this trekking trip. Last year when I trek up to Senaru Crater Rim with my co-worker Mr. Haris was our Chief Guide too. He did very well in managing a big group of us (21pax) and none of us were left behind though some difficulties arises.

Get on to the van taking us to the starting point which is also the office to register and pay for the entrance to Mt. Rinjani National Park. The journey took about 2 hours and when reach the destination we see a group of porter with another guide Mr. Sako were there to greet us. Every porter will get their portion of stuff to carry and that includes our stuff which is not needed during trekking. We decided to leave ahead of porter because usually they are way faster than us though with the over-weight stuff they carry. Mr. Haris will stay back to organise with the porter and Mr. Sako will lead us to move on.

With this group of experience trekker our pace were quicker compare to what I did last year. We arrived first rest point ahead of time and had rest as well as fluid replenishment. Move on after a short break while the sun still not so blazing hot. Nest stop we were there too early thus have to wait a while for the porter because they are carrying the food supply. We will have a simple breakfast which is fruit to replenish the energy used.

After taking the fruit everyone was so energetic and move on much quicker. The mist getting thick when we are at higher altitude. By the time we reach another rest stop the visibility was greatly reduce due to mist. We are ahead of scheduled arrival at this rest stop for lunch. While waiting for our porter cum cook, we start to "dry" our shirt due to high humidity and get warmer clothing on.

Porter quickly setup kitchen and starting to cook our lunch while we get our rest under a cozy tent setup by them. Not too long of wait we can smell someone brewing coffee. We have a selection of instant coffee (3-in-1 premix coffee), tea or Lombok coffee (local coffee which is actually for the porter). But this local coffee taste much better than other and everyone of us like it very much. So sorry to the porter for taking most of their coffee. We are having Mi Goreng (local fried noodles) with fried chicken and egg then fruits as desert.

This time I am trying to reach the crater rim before dark so I could enjoy the view of dawn on crater rim. The pace is getting slower than earlier today because physically we are weak. Along the way met few Malaysian and Singaporean whom will compare this trek to Mt. Kinabalu where the later was too easy. Arrived Senaru Crater Rim before sunset and managed to capture few shots of the Lake Segara Anak from crater rim at this hour. And looks like we are late to the campsite thus can't setup tent at best spot on the crater rim. Our guide finally found a place for us which is not far from the top where we can see the lake.

Picked out our tent for the night then I do some clean up with wet tissue and change. Lay down on the floor mat prepare by the guide enjoying starry sky. Later coffee, again we asked for Lombok coffee, and fries was served. Out of sudden felt several rain drop and it started to rain, not heavy though. When dinner is ready we squeezed into the kitchen tent to enjoy the meal then call it a day.

Back to my tent I started to re-pack my stuff to backpack for tomorrow trekking. Check my phone battery level before making call home to update my status. Seems like not need a charge but my Garmin Edge800 left only 14% of battery. Shit!!! Forgotten my charging cable which I left in hotel with my other bag. For few hours I was not able to sleep because I made such a silly mistake which I told myself I should not when do packing. Last year when trek to the crater rim I forgotten to charge my GPS logger before heading back and this round was worst.

Mount Rinjani 2013 D02 - GiliT

It was nice sunny day to start for a new day, from the discussion we had a night before during dinner we will take speed boat to nearest island for our lunch. The plan is quite simple, breakfast in hotel then free and easy. Meet at lobby 10am then a van will pick us up to the jetty. But I do not want to waste the time do nothing while wait till 10am so immediately after grab my breakfast about 8am then head to the swimming pool for a swim. Left the pool half an hour before 10am and back to room for a change to go island tour.

Everybody got into the van then we are all good to go for a mini excursion. On the way we see few nice spot good for photo this asking the driver if we could have a brief stop. And he brought us to a place where we could walk out to the edge of cliff. This place was awesome and I am telling myself should go again after the trekking on Mount Rinjani.

Arrived the jetty where many boats or luxury yacht "parked" and we start looking for the guy who will bring us to Gili T island with speed boat. After a while 2 small boat shown up and really shocking to see how "naked" the boat was. Although I find it a fun ride on the small speed boat but to other it may be a challenge.

Gili T was the biggest island among the Gilis which three of them consider part of Lombok. More foreigners flooding this island than Lombok island. One reason I could think off as a tourist was the island really brings you out of the urban life style. No motor vehicle  on this island, the only way to move around on this island was either by public transport horse cart or bicycle provided by the hotel you are staying. We hop on to the horse cart going around the island for about 40 minutes then settle down in one of the restaurant (Warung Warna) for lunch. The view from any part of the island was magnificent.

After lunch heading back to Lombok island with speed boat and we will have our own time for few hours before getting a famous grilled seafood as dinner. Again I must get myself into the pool for few laps of swimming, to stretch my muscle and cool off from the hot sun. Back to hotel room once satisfy with a dip in the pool, start to packing for the trekking on Mount Rinjani.

Clean up, change and ready for dinner which I see as carbo-loading session. We were took to a restaurant (Restoran Menega) where the cook will use coconut shell as the burning fuel to grill seafood. The taste was good whcih could be due to the coconut shell and I had few refills of rice to store more energy in the muscle for tomorrow. After dinner went straight back to hotel rest a while then go to bed early to gain more sleep.

A view back to the beach near our hotel.

A new found friend...I don't mean my friend (knew him on this trip) Stefan and the cow. Lol

The cows do know where to pick for a good place to hangout.

After these coconut trees, walk at your own risk. Lol

We will be heading this way to jetty as well as the starting point for our trekking.

The mother and her cattle, don't they look alike....I thought all cow look the same.

One nice curve for a drift...

This jetty will bring us to any of three Gilis.

Few fishing boat was seen and I didn't take any of those luxury yacht.

That's mine ride....cool isn't it?

The only jetty on Gili T aka Gili Trawangan.

The water was so clean and clear.

Many boats along the shore, waiting for customer to go snorkeling, diving, island hopping, etc.

The Terminal but looks like Tube station logo, must be owned by a Brit.

A drink while deciding where shall we go on the island.

A boat on the table...

This is the only public transport you will find on Gili T.

Speechless...

Speechlesssss....

This is the view from my dining table in Warung Warna.

The grills from the fire with coconut aroma...and the rice too. Lol

Mount Rinjani 2013 D01 - the Arrival

About more than a year I have been planning this trip to scale the summit of Mount Rinjani. That time I went to this National Park with my fellow colleagues but our plan is to only reach the crater from Senaru side. Then few of us start to wonder how great it will be to reach the summit of this volcanic mountain.

Thus a group formed by 4 Swiss and 4 Malaysian will be taking up this challenge to trek up the mountain. We are taking the service from same tour agent Adventure Lombok who did well in our last trip. And due to everyone was going to Lombok from different part of the world thus our first day of trekking had to happen on Sunday.

The trek starts on Sunday and at the time of my ticket booking only 3 flights available in a week. That makes me stay much longer than planned trip. I will have to stay additional 2 nights before and after the trekking which total to 7 nights in Lombok. Although it sounds like spending too much do nothing pre and post trekking but I do feel great for this trip. For the extra nights we will be staying in Holiday Resort which previously was Holiday Inn.

The room that will prepare me for the trek and let me rest well after as well.

With the nice balcony where I could hang my wet clothing...
